Productivity Growth Meets Expectations
Nonfarm business productivity increased 0.7% in Q4 2011, down from 1.9% in the third quarter and exactly in-line with the Briefing.com consensus estimate.
Output increased 3.6% in the fourth quarter. That was the strongest increase in output since Q4 2010.
The number of hours worked increased 2.9% in Q4 2011, up from only 0.9% growth in the third quarter. That was the biggest quarterly gain since Q2 2010.
Compensation increased 1.9% in the fourth quarter. That directly led to a 1.2% increase in unit labor costs.
